Bridging Academics with Practice (Industries) is the requirement of THE DAY to get the best of both the worlds. There should be a closer working relationship between Colleges/Institutes with the Industries for the benefits of students and also for practicing engineers. Month of SEPTEMBER is the time to salute the greats in Teaching and Practicing Engineering, as we commemorate birth anniversary of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and Sir. M.V. Vishveshwaraiah.
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, (5 September 1888 - 17 April 1975), was an Indian philosopher and statesman. Radhakrishnan was one of India's most acclaimed scholars of comparative religion and philosophy. He is considered through his efforts to have built a bridge between East and West by having shown the philosophical systems of each tradition to be comprehensible within the terms of the other. He was the first Vice President of India (1952-1962), and the second President of India (1962-1967). Among the many honours he received were a knighthood (1931) and the Bharat Ratna (1954). His birthday is celebrated in India as Teacher's Day on 5 September.
Sir Mokshagundam Vishveshwaraiah, (15 September 1861 - 14 April 1962) was an eminent Indian engineer and statesman born in Muddenahalli in Chikballapur District of Karnataka State. He is a recipient of the Indian republic's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was also knighted by the British for his myriad contributions to the public good. Every year, 15 September is celebrated as the Engineer's Day in India in his memory; a quite a remarkable tribute to the greatest Indian engineer.
He served as the chief engineer during construction of Krishna Raja Sagara on the Kaveri River near Mysore. He also built many dams in the Bombay presidency, the dams built by him are still functional even today, a testimony to his brilliance, skill, honesty and dedication. Sir M V was also called the precursor of economic planning in India. His learned discourse on economic planning in India entitled 'Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India' was the first available document on the planning effort of the country and it is still held as the parent source matter for economic planners.
